Can I remove mildew from acrylic cushions? Keeping your acrylic outdoor cushions clean is an ongoing challenge because of their exposure to the elements. Mildew tends to develop in damp, dark areas so the heat and humidity of Australia make it a common problem with outdoor furniture. Thankfully, mildew can usually be removed fairly easily with the right cleaning products.

Machine-washable cushions

Check your cushions for instructions on how to clean them. If you find something that says they are machine-washable, you’re in luck. As long as your washer has enough capacity for those bulky seat cushions, you can put them through a cool, gentle cycle with ordinary detergent then hang them up to dry.

If you are cleaning only the covers, simply remove them and run them through a gentle wash while the cushions air out in a well-ventilated space.

If they aren’t machine washable…

For outdoor cushions that cannot be put through the washing machine, try the following:

1. Don some rubber gloves and mix 1 part borax with 4 parts warm water. The resulting liquid will be perfect for deep-cleaning the cushions to tackle mildew.

2. Apply the liquid generously to the fabric with a cloth or sponge, then leave to soak for 15-30 minutes.

3. Use clean microfibre cloths to absorb excess moisture.

4. Spray down with a garden hose to rinse away the cleaning solution.

5. Leave the cushions to air dry.

In between these deep cleans, some distilled white vinegar can be sprayed onto any new growth that appears. Once applied, scrub gently with a soft brush then rinse with cool water.

Using bleach

Bleach is often suitable for cleaning acrylic cushion covers. If you are happy to use bleach, try the following method:

1. Mix the bleach with liquid detergent and water (make sure you wear rubber gloves).

2. Apply the solution using a damp cloth or spray bottle then leave to soak for 30 minutes.

3. Brush the stained areas, rinse and leave to air dry.

Mildew prevention

Once you have cleared away any existing mildew, you need to think about preventing it from returning. Think about keeping that furniture out of the shade and commit to brushing the cushions off each day. Spot clean as needed.

There are mould sprays for outdoor furniture that you can use to help prevent the emergence of mildew on furniture frames. This might reduce the likelihood of it spreading onto cushions.
