Take some time to declutter and redesign at least one space to create a calm and orderly oasis within the walls of your home. The following tips can help get you started.
“Go shelf by shelf”
Take a leaf out of Gretchen Rubin’s book Happier at Home, and resolve to “go shelf by shelf” to fight clutter. The concept is simple: whenever you have a moment, move through your home and declutter one space at a time. Start with something small, like your bedside table, or the “junk drawer” in the kitchen. Take everything off of the shelf or out of the drawer, vacuum or wipe down the now empty space and put back only what you want to keep. This will help you decide which items are most important, and you will know where they are when you need them (think: car keys), saving valuable time on your way out the door
Choose Accessories Wisely
Accessories add personality to a home but can easily get out of control and make a space feel cluttered. Coco Chanel once said that before leaving the house, one should look in the mirror and take one thing off. The same is true for accessories in the home. If the living room is looking particularly cluttered, try removing one item, such as a coffee table book or decorative trinket. Once you’ve removed an item, try rearranging the furniture or accessories such as decorative pillows and throws to create a fresh design. A Sunbrella rug can also help define the space. Don’t forget to vacuum behind the furniture before putting it back in place!
Create More Light
The fastest way to make a space feel more spacious is to create the illusion of more light. Take down heavy window treatments, launder them and decide not to put them back up until the fall. Instead, use Sunbrella Sheers to let in just the right amount of filtered light. Stay away from dark colors on the walls and for the textiles in the room; keep patterns to a minimum, but add interest by choosing textural upholstery fabrics like Chartres Flax and Posh Dove. Keep areas under furniture clear and unobstructed, and add clear or reflective surfaces wherever possible.
Decluttering and redesigning a space doesn’t have to be a chore. Take it one intentional step at a time and you might even enjoy the process. What tips and tricks have you used to make a space feel more spacious?
