Outdoor furniture can transform a decking area or patio into an extension of your living room, but if you want it to remain in good condition, you need to spend a bit of time on maintenance duties. Outdoor cushions are designed to a lot harder wearing than traditional cushions, but sun, rain, and general wear and tear all exact a heavy toll on fabrics and cushions. So what is the best way to clean outdoor furniture cushions and restore them to their absolute best?
Removable Cushion Covers
Some types of outdoor cushions are removable. If you are not sure whether yours fall into this category, look for a zipper or Velcro fastening. If there is one, you will be able to take the cushion covers off and wash them, either in the washing machine or by hand. Check the care label before starting.
Stain Removal Tactics
Stains need to be treated before custom made outdoor cushions are washed. Grass stains should come out in the wash as long as the affected area is pre-treated with some liquid detergent. Sun tan lotion will need overnight soaking with detergent before washing on a normal cycle. Mildew also requires special attention. Pre-treat any mildew affected fabrics overnight with a strong detergent and then wash on the hottest temperature possible. You may need to use bleach on white fabrics.
Machine Washable Fabrics
If the fabric is machine washable, place it in a washing machine at the appropriate temperature with some strong detergent. When the washing cycle has finished, take the cushion covers out and let them dry naturally – preferably outdoors if the weather is fine.
Non- Machine Washable Fabrics
Non-machine washable outdoor cushion covers can be washed by hand in a bucket of soapy water, or placed on a flat surface and scrubbed with a plastic brush. If you wash the fabric by hand, make sure you rinse away the detergent thoroughly. It is a good idea to wash by hand on a warm day so the fabric dries quickly in the sun.
Apply More Stain Repellent
Custom made cushions for outdoor furniture are sometimes treated with stain repellent at the point of manufacture, but over time this protection will wear off. Because of this, it is a good idea to give your outdoor fabrics a fresh coat of stain repellent once they have been washed. This will help to protect your furniture and keep it in good condition for another few years.
