How to clean sun-damaged outdoor cushions

How to clean sun-damaged outdoor cushions? Outdoor cushions are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions, but this doesn’t mean that they are immune to damage from the sun. If your outdoor cushions are beginning to look worse for wear and you want to brighten them up, here is our guide for cleaning sun-damaged outdoor cushions.

Keep up with daily maintenance

There are some simple steps that you can take to upkeep your outdoor cushions to improve their longevity. This includes wiping away any surface dirt each day by brushing it off. This stops it from getting embedded in the fibres. Clean up spillages with a dry cloth and a blotting technique. Use a quarter of a cup of mild soap per gallon of lukewarm water and a soft brush to spot clean stains. You may also consider bringing cushions indoors when they are not in use to avoid sun damage and the build-up of dirt as much as possible.

Clean carefully

No matter how careful you are with your cushions, the wear and tear of daily life will mean that they may fade and build up hidden dirt, and perhaps stains, and therefore will need cleaning regularly. However, you need to be careful that you do not exacerbate fading problems when you clean your cushions and be mindful to follow the cleaning instructions given on the label.

You may be able to remove covers and put them in the washing machine. Do it with low temperatures often being best and some detergents designed to bring brightness back to fading materials. But, some fabrics are vulnerable to damage due to machine washing and may be better with simple hand washes. Avoid too much force as this can worsen fading.

Always allow cushions to air dry following any type of cleaning.

Dye or paint

If your cushions are significantly sun damaged and fading fast, you may wish to consider bringing back their colour with dye or paint. This could be more cost-effective than buying new cushions, especially when there is nothing wrong with your current cushion beside a loss of colour. If there is plastic in the fabric, paints can work, although dying is typically more reliable and offers the best results.
