How to dye outdoor fabric for patio furniture

Are your outdoor patio cushions yellowing? Are they faded, stained and worn out? If so, you might be tempted to buy new ones. But it’s not always necessary to spend money on replacement cushions when you can make them look brand new again with some dye for outdoor fabric for your patio furniture. Read on for a step-by-step guide on how to dye your patio cushions and give them that shine they once had!

1. Make sure your cushions can be dyed

To start off, you need to make sure that the material of your patio cushions is suitable for the dying process. Sunbrella fabric is not able to dyed.

There are certain fabrics that can’t be dyed like denim and nylon, so no matter how much you may want to try this handy trick, it’s probably best not to.

However, if your cushions are made from synthetic or natural materials then go right ahead and follow the next steps.

2. Prewash and dry the fabric

Before you dye your outdoor fabric for patio furniture, you need to ensure that the fabric is clean and dry. If they have been stored for a long time, wash and dry your cushions to remove any built-up dirt or grime.

The best way to do this is by washing the fabric in cold water using a gentle detergent and then drying it in the dryer on a low heat.

3. Get dying!

Once you’ve got the cleaning process out of the way, mix up the dye you want. Make sure to wear rubber gloves to avoid the dye coming into contact with your skin and then, using a sponge brush, begin to apply the dye to your patio cushions.

With so many different colours to choose from, it really is as simple as that!

4. Leave them to sit

After you have applied the dye to your cushions, let them sit for about 8 hours in a ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat.

Once the dye has set into the fabric (it’s usually best to wait a few days), wash out the excess dye with cold water. Rinse out your cushion until there is no more colour coming out of it. Once they are dry, they will be ready to be put back to use!
