When you make the decision to keep your patio cushions outdoors, you will inevitably find that they get dirty. Despite being specifically designed for outdoor usage, they are not resistant to gathering dirt and grime when exposed to the elements and nature. Your furniture can fall victim to mildew, fungus and animal waste all within a short amount of time. So, regular cleaning is important. If you don’t already know, here’s how to keep your patio cushions clean.
How to keep patio cushions clean
Some patio cushions come with a zipper-style cover which can simply be removed and cleaned in the washing machine, but if your patio cushion does not have one of these, follow these simple steps below.
Make a mixture
To clean your cushion effectively, you will need to accept the help of a certain kind of bleach. Oxygen bleach works particularly well and works to eliminate any nasty smells from mould or mildew and any other kinds of fungus that have taken up residence in your cushion.
Put on some rubber gloves and mix this diluted substance in a bucket with stain-removing laundry detergent and dish soap. This mixture can then be scrubbed onto the outside of the cushion with a sponge, removing all of its impurities.
Remember to give your cushions a rinse afterwards, but avoid using a hosepipe as this could damage the foam.
Removing mildew
If you discover that your cushion has a truly disgusting stench and unremovable stains, these are likely due to a substance called mildew which grows, uninvited, on fabric. Mildew is best removed with the addition of white vinegar. You can mix this with hot water and apply it to cushion lining to kill off any living organisms.
Whilst the smell from vinegar is incredibly strong at first, it will soon wash out when you scrub the cushions with the soapy mixture described above, so do not worry.
